California Truck Insurance Requirements

California state law requires local truck drivers and new ventures to maintain a minimum amount of liability insurance. How much you need depends on the type of freight you haul and where you haul it. If you don’t cross state lines and your truck is over 10,000 GVW, you must get a CA Intrastate ID Number (T#) and be insured up to the following levels:

$1,000,000Liability Insurance (Oil Transport)
$5,000,000Liability Insurance (Hazmat)
$300,000Liability Insurance (Household Goods)
$750,000Liability Insurance (General Freight)
$20,000/vehicle and $20,000/catastropheCargo Insurance (Intrastate household goods movers and interstate contract carriers)

The insurance requirements for truck drivers who drive through multiple states are more thorough. You must meet the above, and you must meet all the semi truck insurance requirements laid out by the FMCSA. Typical federal liability limits are $750,000 or $1,000,000.

Both California and the USDOT require certain filings be submitted by your insurance agent. Your insurance agent or insurance company should take care of these filings for you. These forms show the government that all your DOT truck insurance requirements are fulfilled. They must be submitted before you can receive your authority. Some common forms include:

  • Form MCS-90
  • MCP-65
  • Form H
  • The BMC-91

Your Operation is Unique

You might be a local or a long hauler, a new venture or a hotshot. You may be a leased owner operator from Los Angeles or a fleet manager in San Diego. Maybe you haul refrigerated foods or heavy equipment. All that to say, no two trucking companies are alike. Your insurance policies need to be put together specifically for you.

Since different truck insurance companies prefer different types of risks, it’s smart to shop around and find a company that is competitive with writing insurance for your specific situation. The bottom line is that you want cheap truck insurance without sacrificing coverage.

The Golden State

There is no other state like California. Although some jerks on the east joke that they wish California would detach from the mainland and become its own county, we know they are uninformed. Who else can boast having Yosemite, the best beaches, Hollywood, and giant Sequoias?  No one can. In a state that is first in the nation for setting trends, you’ll be happy to know that you can also be among the first to shop for truck insurance in a whole new way. Using our service will make the shopping process simple, quick, and effective.
